'Naturalized Citizens Like My Mother Now Live In Fear of Status Reversal'
A woman holding an American flag and citizenship application papers. In this op-ed, writer ZoĆ© Samudzi explains what “citizenship” really means in the United States, as told through her mother’s immigrant story."The 2016 election of President Donald Trump triggered my mother’s traumatic memories further: His rhetoric evoked the political likeness of Ian Smith, the leader of the conservative white minority party from 1964 to 1979 and prime minister of Rhodesia during my mother’s childhood. Trump’s apparent dictatorial aspirations and increasing authoritarian tendencies, including what many have seen as his clear animus for immigrants and nonwhite people, troubled her because of her own immigrant identity, but also because she had never intended to stay in the U.S."

This article strongly reflects Teen Vogue's values and ideologies - they pose a more left wing, liberal attitude, arguing against Trump's policies (this is also apparent in other Trump articles produced by Teen Vogue such as 'Trump gaslighting America'). 'Woke' articles similar to this one signal a shift in the magazine's emphasis toward more political and social engagement.

'R Kelly’s Daughter: "I Have Been Deeply Affected"'

R Kelly's daughter, Joann Kelly, has finally spoken out against her father following the accusations and revelations of his victims. Joann has expressed her support for his alleged victims and has labelled her father as a "monster". She was also subjected to criticism for not speaking out against her father in the wake of the extreme revelations of the allegations of abuse, however after eventually speaking out she stated that this is a difficult process for her and that she empathises with the victims, giving them her upmost support. A reluctance to deal with personal issues via social media had prevented her from going public sooner, however when she did speak out she wrote:  “To all the people the people that feel I should be speaking up/against everything that is going on right now, I just want you all to understand that devastated is an understatement for all that I feel currently...I pray for all the families and [women] who have been affected by my father’s actions. Trust, I have been deeply affected by all of this". R Kelly has no contact with his children including Joann and has denied all allegations made against him.

This is arguably an example of mass amateurisation in the media due to the link to social media and her message being spread via instagram. This story is particularly relevant in the present media and especially with in the black community. Accusations against R Kelly have been made for over a decade however it is speculated that authorities and community didn't do much to stop or act out against it as the majority of these victims were afro-caribbean women: due to their position in society as a minority they were believed to be ignored or not supported enough by the system. This news story is a relevant post on the Voice as it reflects their stance on bringing black women out of the dark and in the weakened position they have been put under. Common is also a huge influence in the black community so his stance on this situation will be seen as relevant and audiences will be interested to hear what he has to say. This article is an example of quality journalism - audiences would read this article for surveillance or possibly personal identity as some audiences may be able to relate to the R Kelly scandal having been positioned in similar situations and experiences.
