This news story was at the top of the Daily Mail homepage which is essentially a reflection of audience interests - the Daily Mail news readers take more interest in soft news than hard news which is also a reflection of the brand's values.

Research by homeless charity Crisis discovered that London’s homeless will make up one quarter of people sleeping rough in the UK this Christmas -24,250 people are facing a homeless Christmas across the country. London is the capital of England, UK and has the highest percentage of homelessness across the country - London is believed to be a developed, working city so these figures may be shocking and/or unexpected. As the temperatures plummet across the UK, and below zero in London in the last week, mayor Sadiq Khan announced that emergency cold weather shelters will be opening up across the capital. Homelessness is becoming more and more apparent as charities and political members are beginning to do more for homeless people -shelters, support.

This news story is again another example of soft news as this is more of a human interest story where readers would engage with this type of text for surveillance and personal identification as they may be a part of the many homeless in London or know people who are.
