1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).
WWW- Good range of theories covered, especially in question 3.
EBI- Write in paragraphs. More detail/examples needed for question 2.
2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
Question 1 - Diversification: Diversification means companies can embrace new technology and find new revenue streams e.g. music industry and streaming.
Question 2 - FOR: Public service broadcasting maintains quality standards and audiences appreciate the quality
and consistency of BBC, ITV and Channel 4. PSB channels still dominate audience ratings even after digital fragmentation. TV remains at the heart of the country and the collective experience of television is vital to maintain in British society.
AGAINST: BBC and Channel 4 shouldn’t produce popular programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing as
this is unfair on commercial broadcasters struggling to survive in the digital age. Instead PSB channels should focus on programming that isn’t profitable so therefore not produced by commercial rivals.
Question 3 - Moral panic (Cohen) could be used to argue that the media does not have a damaging effect
on audiences – it is just a convenient scapegoat to blame for issues in society. E.g. poverty, violence, gun crime etc.
3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment?
Revision - 5
4) Look at your answer for Question 1. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.
Yes.
5) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?
I could have added more examples of commercial broadcasters and went into more detail both about public service broadcasters and commercial broadcasters.
6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.
How far do you agree with the view that the media has a damaging effect on audiences?
It can be argued that the media does not have as much of a damaging effect on audiences as it is thought to have. Cohen's theory of moral panic suggests that the media is just a convenient scapegoat to blame for issues in society (for example gun violence, crime, poverty) and therefore does not have a damaging effect on society. Cohen's theory suggests that the media does not have a damaging effect on society however technopanics – the online version of moral panic - is connected to the idea the internet is dangerous and unregulated. This suggests that the media perhaps can have a damaging effect on audiences as it is not regulated as much as print advertisement and TV which means more harmful ideologies can be spread easier without it being stopped or restricted.
