Introduction to Representation

1) List the different people/groups represented in the trailer (men/women/Americans etc.)
  • Men
  • Women
  • Americans
  • Albanians
  • Teenagers
2) For each group you identify, decide whether the representation is a dominant or alternative portrayal. Explain why you think this.
The representation of women is a dominant portrayal as in this film they are presented as being weaker and more susceptible to being abducted, trafficked, raped and taken advantage of - this is a sustained stereotype of women. In this film the women (focus on the daughter) are shown to be vulnerable and naive which is a dominant portrayal as these things are often a stereotype linked to women, especially younger women. The representation of men is a dominant portrayal as the main character in this film is male and is presented as being brave, strong and the hero. The representation of Albanians is a dominant portrayal as they are often stereo typed to be involved with illegal activity and violence which is reinforced in this film. The representation of teenagers in this film is a dominant portrayal as in this film they follow the stereotype of being reckless, following their own mind by not being cautious and not listening to their parents.

3) What stereotypes can you identify in the trailer?
The stereotype of women as being vulnerable and ultimately weaker than men and needing a man's help to get out of a life threatening situation. The stereotype of men being strong, overpowering and the saviour. The stereotype of Albanians as being dodgy - often linked to violence and crime.

4) Why might the Taken trailer offend or alienate certain groups?
The stereotypes of Albanians used may offend that group of people as they may feel alienated and as if the negative portrayal of them is inaccurate and an unfair representation - putting that group of people under a bad name/stereotype. The stereotypes of women in the trailer may offend those who have extreme views about sexism - feminists - as the trailer portrays women as helpless and vulnerable.

5) Why do mainstream film and television texts such as Taken so often use stereotypes?
Stereotypes are the overview of society. By challenging stereotypes mainstream film and television would be less appealing to people as it would be out of the norm for them to watch it and may not be as appealing.
